Joining Altos Labs!
This summer I will be moving to San Diego to join Altos Labs as a Machine Learning Research Scientist! I will be exploring how we can use machine learning to accelerate scientific progress in cell and molecular biology. Eventually I want to write a more thorough reflection on my experience with the 2022-2023 job market, but for now here are a few reasons I’m excited about this role:
- The intersection of ML and biology is an incredibly cool space. Biological systems at every scale are mind-boggling complex, and I am very interested in understanding how we can use machine learning to tame some of that complexity and enable new kinds of science.
- Academic freedom with industry resources. My role comes with the freedom to publish, give talks, and collaborate with researchers in academia and industry. At the same time, Altos was launched with $3B and is making extraordinary investments in data, computational resources, and talent. This combination of freedom and resources is hard to come by.
- Ambition and focus. Altos has a lot of runway and an institutional mandate to pursue top-notch basic science, which should promote ambitious, high risk, high reward research.
I’m looking forward to sharing more details soon!
